Original artwork
Most every rock climber knows about Smith Rock, located in the Central Oregon high desert. Ever since I moved to Central Oregon in 2007, I have been a regular at Smith Rock and have easily completed over 100 hikes up Misery Ridge alone. I have a deep love for this area, as do 1000's of visitors and rock climbers who have found their favorite route to climb or trail to hike. This is why, when you see images about Central Oregon, Smith Rock is regularly captured by artists of all mediums. The view is familiar but the vivid color pallet makes this image unique. You'll see the jutting arêtes highlighted in brilliant yellows and oranges, positioned next to a shadowed crack or crevasse painted in blues and purples, giving the image an almost 3D appearance.
I painted this image using oil paints on a gallery wrapped canvas. The 2" edges are all painted so that the painted image extends beyond the front surface. The layers upon layers of paint adds to the visual depth and rich hues that can't be achieved with watercolor, acrylic, or even photos that will fade over time.
