Alaska Caribou
36" x 24"
Gallery wrapped Oil on Canvas
Original artwork
This image was first captured by a friend (of a friend) outside of their industrial plant in Alaska. I loved the juxtaposition of the caribou grazing in the pastures with his herd, not bothered about the industrial plant that is lit up in the background.
I painted this image using oil paints on a gallery wrapped canvas. The 2" edges are all painted so that the painted image extends beyond the front surface. I used a modern color pallet but muted the background and foreground so they wouldn't distract from the main focus of the image, the caribou. I painted the caribou using blocks of light and dark colors to help give a more interesting composition, which would have otherwise been a dark and uninteresting object.
This oil painting has layers upon layers which adds to the visual depth and richness in color that can't be achieved with watercolor, acrylic, or even photos that will fade over time.
